Daily Walks and Adventures with Your Dog

Daily walks keep your dog fit, balanced and curious about the world. Most adult dogs need at least 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise a day, depending on breed, age and health. Active breeds such as retrievers, shepherds and terriers often need 60 to 90 minutes.

Puppies, senior dogs and flat-faced breeds do better with shorter, gentler walks, especially in hot weather.

What to Bring on Every Dog Walk

Be ready for short strolls and long adventures alike.

Poop bags

Always carry enough poop bags and pick up after your dog. It keeps paths, parks and neighborhoods clean for everyone.

Water and a travel bowl

On longer walks and warm days, bring fresh water and offer it regularly, not only when your dog seems thirsty.

Leash, ID and treats

A secure leash and harness, an ID tag with your contact details and a few treats to reward good behavior.

Travel Safely with Your Dog in the Car

In a sudden stop or a crash, an unrestrained dog can be thrown through the car and get seriously hurt, and so can the passengers. Secure your dog with a harness attached to the seat belt, a dog car seat or a travel crate, and make sure they can sit or lie down comfortably.

On road trips, stop every couple of hours so your dog can drink and stretch their legs. And never leave your dog alone in a parked car on a warm day.

Dog Walking & Travel FAQ

How much exercise does my dog need?

Most adult dogs need at least 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise a day. Active breeds often need 60 to 90 minutes, while puppies and senior dogs need shorter walks.

What should I bring on a long walk?

Poop bags, fresh water with a travel bowl, a secure leash and harness, an ID tag and a few treats.

How do I keep my dog safe in the car?

Always secure your dog with a harness attached to the seat belt, a dog car seat or a travel crate. Take a break every couple of hours for water and a short walk.

Is hot pavement dangerous for my dog’s paws?

Yes, hot pavement can burn paw pads. Hold the back of your hand on the ground for 7 seconds: if it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your dog. On hot days, walk early in the morning or in the evening.
